Mahler Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection"
Mahler Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection". Claudio Abbado conducts the Lucerne Festival Orchestra & the Orfeón Donostiarra (Chorus Master José Antonio Sainz Alfaro) in 2003. Soloists are soprano Eteri Gvazava and contralto Anna Larsson. Directed for TV by Michael Beyer. Released 2010, EuroArts claimed that the disc has 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio surround sound, but see comments below. Grade: C
The performance on the disc is fine, but the product has had serious technical problems. First, it froze on the Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player and maybe on other players. But this problem was eventually solved, at least for Oppo owners, when Oppo released new firmware. Another problem is that the 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio surround sound track was in fact just a stereo soundtrack reworked for "surround." The final product did not have the fidelity and dynamic range that the Blu-ray product provides. This was caught by customers in late 2007 and apparently admitted by EuroArts folks. It seems that the only way to make this right was for Euroarts to recall this title and remaster the disc with the correct sound track. So this accounts for the "C" grade we give this title. We do not know whether the discs for this title being sold now (late 2011) still have the "wrong soundtrack" problem or whether a recall was made by EuroArts.
Please help us by writing a comment that we can place here as a mini-review of this title. In particular, we would like to hear from someone who knows the history of and present status of the controversial soundtrack.
