Wikipedia says Mozart wrote 22 musical dramas. 8 of these were juvenile works. The first complete, full opera was La finta giardiniera (Mozart was 18). Then followed 13 more works, of which 6 fall short of complete, full status for various reasons. So for our purposes, Mozart wrote 8 important operas. We now have one or more fine HDVDs for each of the operas. Here's the list (with Mozart's age when he wrote each one): La finta giardiniera (18), Idomeneo, re di Creta (25), Die Entführung aus dem Serail (26), Le nozze di Figaro (30), Don Giovanni (31), Così fan tutte (34), La clemenza di Tito (35), and Die Zauberflöte (36). Our La finta giardiniera might be the most surprising of all these titles: it's a delightful production of an astonishingly good work for one so young. We have HDVDs of Nozze and Così fan tutte that are among the best opera recordings ever made. It's now August 25, 2012. We are sure to be getting more great recordings of the Mozart opera canon, so check the Alist for the latest information. Now anyone with a home theater can become a Mozart opera expert!
