Most HDVD productions at the Arena di Verona look bad. Sets and costumes designed for the huge Roman arena are intended to be seen by 20,000 people. But when you get close to the action, the sets and costumes too often look crude and even ridiculous. Lighting is always a special challenge for these outdoor shows at night; they are also trying to shoot this in 3D which aggravates the lighting issue. Maybe De Bosio has figured out a way to solve these tough problems.
