Mike Ashman, writing in the April 2015 Gramophone (page 112) is happy enough with the singers and the orchestra, but he warns of a "relentlessly old-fashioned production" by director Hugo De Ana. For a more modern production, Ashman would prefer the Salzburg Festival production with director Stein and Pappano as conductor. But see also the (slightly edited) comment from John Aikten below defending Hugo De Ana's designs for this Don Carlo. Finally, if you happen to have The Opera Gala from Baden-Baden, you can see Vargas (Don Carlo) and Tézier (Rodrigo) sing a famous duet from Don Carlo back in 2007.
